The Tiergarten district of Berlin is home to the Zoological Garden and the Elephant Gate is one of the two public zoo entrances. Because the Elephant Gate was destroyed during the Second World War, it had to be extensively restored according to the original plans. The gate, rebuilt in Asian style between 1983 and 1984, features two life-size elephants. They carry a roof in the style of a pagoda. The elephant gate is decorated with gold-coloured ornaments and bricks, which are glazed green for a noble look. The Elephant Gate is the landmark of the Zoological Garden and has been a listed building for several years. Directly opposite is Breitscheidplatz with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Europa Center.
