After the Second World War, when many streets were almost completely destroyed, the Stalinallee was built between Strausberger Platz and the Frankfurter Tor, almost 90 metres wide and several kilometres long. The architecture of today's Karl-Marx-Allee is characterised by building complexes up to 300 metres long. These buildings, up to 9 storeys high, were built according to the specifications of the SED. The towers at Frankfurter Tor, planned and realised by the architect Hermann Henselmann, became the landmark of Karl-Marx-Allee.
